Christian Knudsen

Knudsen, who was born in Denmark, graduated from Sir George Williams University in Montreal in 1970. An extended tour of Japan in 1973 and his interest in Zen Buddhism left indelible impressions on his sensibility. From the beginning, photography was as important to him as painting, and his work from the early to mid-1970s used photo emulsion sometimes with an exposed images, sometimes without, juxtaposing the tonalities of black-and-white photography with areas of acrylic paint. He gives and informational flavour to this, with salutes to Rauschenberg’s collages; however, the comparison is superficial because Knudsen does not subsume his component parts into some larger configuration but compartmentalizes them, giving them their own space within the larger grid of layout. Even when, in the diptychs and triptychs at the end of the decade, the photographic image disappeared, for all the painterly effects, the grammar of their construction, the conceptual schemata, the respective materials and the processes of their application, the works never really shed their individual identities and their particular lives.  Knudsen’s characteristic operation was an analytic spelling out of his pictorial elements and their delineation in manual but autonomous processes, each of which left a visible trace.
