Joe Lima

The work of Joe Lima is identified by the perpetual quest of the enigma by exploring the relationship between our landmarks and the mysterious. The process is repeated in a random approach of collecting and reconfiguring the models by placing samples of information and images on a singular surface enveloped by the infinite space of the black. Lima tries to unravel the mystery in the structure, this something hidden and inaccessible. Joe Lima describes his work as a conjunction between intimacy and extent. "We penetrate into the intimacy of our existence in relation to the immensity of another world, of another dimension. I am particularly interested in the way in which the attention of this physical world reveals the unknown and curiously penetrates the domain of the secret and the mysterious. It is a way of examining and responding to the act of clandestine listening, a secret act of communication with the natural world. In the process of creating these works, I focus on the effect that figures and structures have on the environment they occupy, and our perception of their presence in this environment in return. It is a way for me to get in touch and to understand what is hidden there, revealing contemplation, research and individual communication with the invisible concealed in structures, landscapes and interior spaces. "

Born in the Azores (Portugal), Joe Lima lives and works in Montreal (QC). He holds a Fine Arts diploma from the Lanshawa College (ON) and a BFA from the Concordia University. His work has recently been presented at the McClure Gallery (Montreal, 2018), and at the Woodstock Art Gallery, with Walter Redinger (Woodstock, 2016). Lima has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Canada and Europe, including the International Biennial of Engraving of Liège (Belgium, 2011 & 2012).
