Mitch Mitchell

Through an interdisciplinary print-based artistic practice, Mitch Mitchell explores identities of familial histories through the relationships of labour, industry and trade. Relying on notions of copying, handmade work and manufactured objects, Mitch Mitchell combines references to art history and images of mass culture consumption, which he reinterprets in order to emphasize their aesthetic, historical and economic worth. Using recognizable objects, representative of manual skills or manufactured objects, his work raises questions about the value of work or its alienating nature, about the richness or ordinariness of materials, and touches on issues of consumption, heritage preservation and social distinction.

Born in Chicago (IL), Mitch Mitchell lives and works in Montreal. He holds an MFA from the University of Alberta and a BFA from the Illinois State University. He has exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous individual and group exhibitions, including Hand made, a collective exhibition presented at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (2018) and  I Will Meet You in the Sun, a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia curated by Sarah Fillmore in 2016. His work was selected to represent Canada at the Printmaking Biennial in Douro, Portugal (2010 and 2012) and at the Contemporary Canadian Print Exhibition at the Chongqing Art Museum in China (2011). He has won numerous national and international awards and his work is now in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Gallery of Alberta.
