We are thrilled to present new works by Em Davenport and Raúl Aguilar Canela at Feria Material in Mexico City, from February 5-8, 2026.

Em Davenport’s practice engages contemporary questions of visibility, mediation, and the construction of subjectivity, particularly as they relate to social media and the cultural economies of attention. Her work offers a critical investigation into how artists operate simultaneously as producers and products within contemporary media systems. Working across multiple formats—including painting, assemblage, writing, and curatorial projects—Davenport develops a research-based, conceptually integrated practice that examines the systems through which images circulate and acquire meaning. Central to this inquiry is an exploration of how identity, belief, and intimacy are performed, projected, and consumed. By foregrounding themes of parasocial relationships, sincerity, and authenticity, her work aligns with current discourse on digital labor, affect economies, and influencer culture, interrogating the relational dynamics between artwork, artist persona, and audience.

Raúl Aguilar Canela’s painting practice examines how the visual language of success, productivity, and acceleration shapes contemporary subjectivity. The artist is drawn to symbols of corporatism and professional culture—arrows, stars, bars, and global imagery—and to the ways these forms circulate as promises of achievement, mobility, and self-optimization. Within the work, these motifs are exaggerated, fragmented, and pushed to the point of collapse, becoming pastiches that expose the aggression and emptiness embedded in their optimism. While the imagery employed is sharp and forceful, the artist’s process is deliberately slow and attentive. Built through multiple layers of oil paint and an accumulation of small, careful gestures, the paintings resist the speed and efficiency they reference. This tension between visual aggression and physical gentleness is central to Aguilar Canela’s practice.
