Galerie Nicolas Robert is proud to present Spongieuses, an exhibition by Laurence Pilon. Pilon's new paintings function as spaces of resistance and compassion, in which they questions art-historical representations of female bodies, or their allusion, in the natural landscape. Their recent work reflects ecofeminist concerns, such as the effects of environmental degradation on women bodies. Laurence Pilon revisits the trope of bathers through an impure palette, evoking a complex materiality which is both porous and fossilized. Rather than pose for the male gaze, Pilon’s figures engage in a collective effort of protection.
Born in Montreal, Laurence Pilon lives and works in Guelph, Ontario. They are a Master of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Guelph and hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Arts from Concordia University, which they obtained with great distinction in 2015.
